In a move to revolutionize music creation on YouTube, Google is currently testing generative AI features that enable users to compose music tracks using either a text prompt or a simple hummed tune. The initial feature, known as Dream Track, has been rolled out to select creators on the platform. Dream Track is designed to autonomously generate brief 30-second music tracks, mimicking the distinctive styles of renowned artists who have collaborated with YouTube on this innovative development.
This development comes as YouTube navigates the evolving norms and copyright regulations surrounding AI-generated music while maintaining its relationships with major music labels. The issue gained prominence when an AI-generated ‘Drake’ song went viral earlier this year, prompting YouTube to collaborate with Universal Music to establish guidelines for AI-generated music on its platform.
YouTube’s Dream Track feature is currently in the testing phase with a select group of creators in the United States. The tool can replicate the styles of nine artists: Alec Benjamin, Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Papoose, Sia, T-Pain, and Troye Sivan. Through video demonstrations, the platform showcases how a text prompt like ‘A ballad about how opposites attract, upbeat acoustic’ can generate a track in the style of Charlie Puth or a prompt like ‘A sunny morning in Florida, R&B’ can produce a T-Pain-inspired song. The software can create lyrics, a backing track, and an AI-generated voice that mirrors the chosen artist’s style.
Beyond Dream Track, YouTube is also introducing other Music AI Tools designed to facilitate music track creation without traditional instruments. Video demonstrations exhibit the tool’s ability to transform a hummed melody and a text prompt like ‘saxophone solo’ into a saxophone track, convert beatboxing into a drum loop, turn singing into an orchestral score, and transform chords from a MIDI keyboard into a vocal choir.
