Ken Pillonel, a hardware prototyping consultant, has undertaken a remarkable project to create a transparent AirPods Pro charging case using advanced 3D printing techniques. The project’s inception involved Pillonel downloading 3D files and employing transparent Stereolithography (SLA) resin to forge the distinctive AirPods Pro case. Employing a Formlabs Form 3+ 3D printer, he meticulously printed the components, cleansing them with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA), and then employing compressed air for thorough drying.

The next phase entailed curing the parts, followed by an arduous sanding process executed in successive stages with grits of 400, 600, 800, and 1000. Throughout this process, the parts were regularly immersed in tap water to ensure cleanliness and evaluate progress.
After cleansing the parts with new IPA and utilizing hot air to prevent mineral residue, Pillonel meticulously applied a clear spray varnish, transforming the once-opaque components into a stunning, entirely transparent finish. This achievement not only aligns with a nostalgic aesthetic reminiscent of transparent gadgets from the past but also serves as a testament to Pillonel’s commitment to advocating repairability and sustainability in the electronics realm.
