From October 9, Spotify has introduced changes to its free service in India to expand its paid subscriber base potentially. While maintaining a commitment to accessible streaming, certain features will shift behind a subscription paywall, with a greater emphasis on song recommendations.

Starting October 9, free users on Spotify will experience some alterations to their listening experience. They won’t have the ability to:
Play songs in a specific order within a playlist.
Navigate back to previous songs.
Select a specific part of a song for playback.
These adjustments aim to create a consistent free experience across all markets. Nevertheless, free users will retain the flexibility to select individual songs, and there will be no limitations on streaming hours. Replaying a song is as simple as returning to the playlist and tapping on the desired track.
These changes align with the evolving landscape in India’s music streaming industry, where some competitors like Gaana have shifted to subscription-only models in the past year. Notably, Spotify has refrained from raising prices in the Indian market, despite implementing price increases in other global markets.
Smart Shuffle Takes Center Stage
As part of these updates, Smart Shuffle becomes the default listening mode for free users, with no option to disable it. Traditional shuffle mode transitions to a premium feature. Smart Shuffle, introduced in March 2023, enriches playlists with personalised song recommendations that match the playlist’s vibe or mood.
Spotify designed this feature to keep listening sessions fresh, enhancing the overall user experience. Users will also have the flexibility to add or hide songs within their playlists.
Spotify Premium plans in India
In India, Spotify’s premium subscription begins at just ₹7 per day, providing users with an ad-free music experience on mobile devices and the capability to download up to 30 songs on a single mobile device. Additionally, the ₹119 per month subscription offers the convenience of downloading up to 10,000 songs on five different devices.
