Zerodha’s billionaire co-founder and CEO Nithin Kamath is married to Seema Patil whom he met during his initial trading days while juggling a BPO gig to pay off loans. Seema’s dad is an army veteran whom Nithin fondly recalls as having persuaded him to get a government job to marry Seema. The couple got married in 2008 eventually amidst an unprecedented global recession. Kamath brother’s Zerodha, have been resilient amid the global economic slowdowns. They eventually were ranked the youngest under 40, self made Indian billionaires and also numero uno philanthropists in the category. Meanwhile, despite making it big, billionaire Nithin’s father-in-law is a humble grocery shop owner and seems quite content with the lifestyle. Nithin shared a pic with his father-in-law at the grocery store and wrote at length how inspiring this has been.

Nithin remarks that being content is the only way to genuine freedom and his father-in-law Shivaji Patil exemplifies this to the core. An Indian army veteran who lost his fingers to frostbite in Kargil War, started a shop in Belgaum. 70 year old Mr Patil goes to the daily market on his old scooter that’s modified for specially-abled. His only help is mother-in-law who assists Mr Patil with running the grocery shop and managing the household.

Being content is the only way to true freedom. A person who embodies this is my father-in-law, Shivaji Patil
He was in the Indian Army & voluntarily retired as a Havaldar after losing his fingers to frostbite during the Kargil War. He started a grocery shop in Belgaum after. 1/5

Nithin further writes that Mr Patil refuses to stop working despite Seema and his success. Mr Patil gets ecstatic explaining how he makes profit with a 25% margin in Chikkis (peanut-jaggery bar). Despite losing fingers in the war, Mr Patil has never been complaining. Zerodha’s boss however quips that the only time Mr Patil wanted anything was when he told Nithin to get a government job to marry Seema.

He refuses to stop working, even with the success Seema and I have had. When I ask him about margins for various products in the shop, there is still a twinkle in his eye. He speaks about a 25% margin on chikkis, buying a box at Rs 200 & selling them individually for Rs 250. 3/5

I have never seen him wanting something or complaining, not even about losing his fingers in the war.

Although, he did try to convince me to get a government job when I asked him permission to marry his daughter in 2007 when I was still struggling😬 4/5

Nithin concludes his 5-post Twitter thread on Mr Patil, by stating how he has been geeking all along to find the crux of existentialism. He has found it, the billionaire remarks. The answer is to be content, he states. Money can’t ever buy this.

I have been geeking out about increasing healthspan or how to live a good life until the end.

I have no doubt that the answer is to be content and never stop being active mentally and physically. Money can’t buy this, and he is the best example. 5/5
