Adding more misery to the self-inflicted wound of OpenAI, more than 500 employees of the company have threatened to quit if their demands are not met. In a letter to the board, the undersigned, including CTO Mira Maruti, CSO Ilya Sutskever, and others, questioned the competence of the board. They remarked that the process by which former CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman were removed has jeopardized all the work at OpenAI.

The employees further slammed the board for replacing interim CEO Mira Maruti with former Twitch co-founder and CEO Emmett Shear.

The employees accused the board of lacking competence, judgment, and care for OpenAI’s mission and staff. The employees also mentioned that they’ll quit and join the new Microsoft subsidiary led by Sam and Greg. They remarked that the Satya Nadella company has assured them of open positions at the new vertical. Unless the entire board quits, the employees warned that they would leave OpenAI imminently. They also demand the reinstatement of Sam Altman, along with a few recommendations for two new independent directors, including Bret Taylor and Will Hurd.

Ironically, Ilya Sutsveker, who participated in the board’s decisions, is also on the list here. Earlier, the Chief Scientist at OpenAI expressed deep regret for his participation in the board’s reckless decision.

While everyone was anticipating Sam to announce his next move on Monday, Satya Nadella announced that the former OpenAI CEO would be joining Microsoft. Sam reiterated Satya’s statement, and the social media went nuts. The latest tea is that Sam still wants to get back to OpenAI. Even as employees rally behind him, posting heart emojis, Sam is reacting to every single one of them. The love and support for Sam are very evident. What is not is the exact reason why he was sacked. When Ilya posted his apology, Elon Musk reacted and gave fuel to the conspiracy theory that the company probably has achieved AGI and is close enough. Hence the panic-driven decision to fire Sam for allegedly not disclosing it to the board in line with their mission of developing a responsible AI.

Why did you take such a drastic action?

If OpenAI is doing something potentially dangerous to humanity, the world needs to know.
