Eric Joel Horvitz, the chief scientific officer at Microsoft, has junked Elon Musk’s (and others) signed open letter calling for a pause on the development of AI for 6 months. According to Eric, it is fairly reasonable for people to be concerned; however, the whole idea of AI taking over is farfetched. As opposed to a pause, the Microsoft top gun believes we need to jump in. Eric spoke with Fortune on Sunday, stating that he believes in ‘acceleration’ and not the opposite.

‘Eric Horvitz told Fortune in an interview published Sunday that while he respects the people who signed the letter and understood that people might have concerns about AI, he believes an “acceleration” — not a pause — is actually necessary.’ https://t.co/zfnliGIkbI

Horvitz also said that he respected all those who signed the letter, however, the whole thing is ‘a very ill-defined request.’ In some ways, at least per the computer scientist. He says that a six month pause ain’t much of a pause really. Eric believes that we need to throttle ahead and invest more in understanding the nuances of this emerging and ever-evolving technology, even to the extent of even regulating it.

Eric also allays the paranoia of machines taking over men. Of course, what’s worrisome is the socio-cultural impact of any technology, which has political implications as well. He believes that few aspects of humanity will be replaced by the emergence of artificial intelligence.

“My reaction is that almost everything about humanity won’t be replaced by machines,” Microsoft’s Chief Scientific Officer Eric Horvitz said. https://t.co/DuBXxZGRT4

Earlier, in an unprecedented move, Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, the renowned Godfather of AI, left Google. His move was intended for him to freely speak on the risks of AI. Speaking with the New York Times, Dr. Hinton stated that a part of him regrets some of his life’s work. His concern is over ordinary people not being able to recognize what is true anymore. To Dr. Hinton, this is quite scary.
