Elon Musk is shifting gears with a new regulation for community notes. Any creator ‘noted’ to be spreading misinformation will be demonetized. The community notes were initially integrated into the bird app during former boss and co-founder Jack Dorsey’s reign in 2021. In his announcement, the billionaire boss wrote that the idea is to maximize the incentive for accuracy and thereby curb sensationalism.

Making a slight change to creator monetization:

Any posts that are corrected by @CommunityNotes become ineligible for revenue share.

The idea is to maximize the incentive for accuracy over sensationalism.

Here’s how netizens reacted to Elon Musk’s announcement: AltNews co-founder Mohammed Zubair remarked that India has become the disinformation capital of the world. The fake news buster wanted to know when the changes were being rolled out.

When is it rolling out in India. India has become the disinformation capital of the World.

A right-wing account in India known as The Hawk Eye wrote that India desperately needs one, assuming enough testing is done in the USA. Another popular account remarked that this needs to be rolled out before the general elections in India next year.

Roll it out in India. Desperately needed. I assume enough testing done for USA. Disinformation campaign happening everywhere, not just USA.

Please launch community notes in India before our national elections 🙏🙏

An account that posts stats and infographics joked that their revenue would be down to zero now.

My paycheck is going to be $0 😹

One user reminded Musk that community notes are abused, where even satire videos are tagged with a note stating that it is a fake video.

There are so many community notes on obvious satire videos, where they just write, “this is a fake video, here is the link to the original video”

And the satire videos are clearly marked as satire. They don’t need “context added”.

Earlier, in a post shared, Elon Musk was shot with a ‘community note’. The Tesla boss reacted by stating that he loves getting community notes as it proves that no one is above the regulation.

I love getting Noted – proves that no one is free from being corrected!

This is obviously a joke meme, but there is more than a grain of truth to it. We should aspire to see things from the point of view of others.

Meanwhile, on charges of community notes being weaponized by nefarious entities, Elon Musk warned that since the code is open source, any such attempt will be out in the open. Responding to another tweet about throttling some accounts, Musk wrote that the process will be made transparent by the end of the year.

Worth “noting” that any attempts to weaponize @CommunityNotes to demonetize people will be immediately obvious, because all code and data is open source

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 29, 2023

That has already begun and should be fully transparent by end of year.

There are so many hidden layers to the system, some of which we are still discovering.

Most of the reach reduction is suboptimal code, rather than malice.

Here’s how you can become a community note contributor.
